Empathy
Exam Lane Design
The XOMA Smart Eye Exam Lane addresses some of the most troubling issues in the eye exam experience for both doctors and patients. For doctors, it elevates their practice and improves ergonomics and helps prevent all-too-common neck and back injuries. For patients, it is a friendly face in a typically anxiety-inducing appointment.

Current Exam Lane Design
We assessed the existing system to determine the brand value to retain and areas for improvement. Reliance Medical is already highly regarded in the industry due to their Made in USA commitment and the durable nature of their products. However, the current lanes did not meet contemporary aesthetic standards, and there were some persistent ergonomic concerns for doctors. The new lane primarily aimed to rectify these issues while enhancing the eye examination experience for patients.
New Exam Lane Design
The new design addresses ergonomics and comfort for both doctors and patients:
All instruments within easy reach
All components easily adjust to doctor preferences
Simplified wireless remotes
Friendly forms and easy to clean surfacing
Modern aesthetic to enhance the modern office
CMF Development
After researching and analyzing current office and retail design trends (2019), I created this CMF wheel graphic to visualize and strategize CMF options.
We developed a CMF strategy that would allow the most customization opportunities on the parts of the product that were easiest to customize during manufacturing and assembly while having the biggest visual impact—upholstery and table surfaces. The parts that are more difficult to customize during manufacturing would remain neutral colors that supported the existing visual brand language.
CMF Application Examples:
Light
Natural
Dark
This was a unique project in that one team was able to see this through the whole design process from the problem statement to the final functional prototype.
As an industrial designer on the project, I contributed to design research, concept ideation, concept refinement, prototyping, and the development of marketing assets through photorealistic rendering and graphic design.
What I appreciated most about this project is the team’s dedication to empathy for the doctor and the patient. Every decision made was intentional toward the goal of physical and mental comfort and uncompromising ergonomics.
As part of the larger effort, I worked on concept development, prototyping, modeling, and spec sheets for the remote controls.
